The Eerie Abandoned Bunkers of WWII

Across wartime Western Europe, defensive bunkers sprung up to uneasily counter the constant threat of the enemy. Some on land, some by sea, but now, all derelict.Photographer Jonathan Andrew toured several countries to capture these haunting, dilapidated relics.

The structures—once bristling with guns and men steeled, ready to fire them—are now vandalized, crumbling, and forgotten. Seeing them in this state, devoid of their military function, puts an eye on their forms—often strange, but certainly designed to intimidate with their boxy brutishness. Except for the one that looks vaguely like a stapler. Nothing very intimidating about that.
